3 killed, 3 hospitalized in wrong-way highway accident in Fontana, California

A wrong-way accident in Fontana on Saturday morning left three people dead and three others hospitalized.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at about 6:34 a.m. on the 210 Freeway just east of Citrus Avenue.

Two vehicles were involved – a Ford sedan and a Lexus SUV. The CHP said the sedan was driving the wrong way, traveling east instead of west.

As the palanquin exited Citrus Avenue, it collided head-on with the SUV, which was carrying five passengers, officials said.

Photos from the scene showed both vehicles completely crushed, with auto parts and debris strewn across the freeway.

Both the drivers of the sedan and the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. The five SUV passengers have been identified as a 43-year-old man, a 42-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl, a 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, all from Highland. ,

The CHP said the 16-year-old girl was taken to a local hospital where she later died.

Three other passengers suffered serious injuries and all were taken to hospital for treatment.

At present, the driver of the palanquin has not been identified.

The cause of the fatal accident is being investigated.
