The postponed Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game won’t be rescheduled this weekend, but officials said Tuesday it could be restarted at another time after the horrific collapse of Bills safety Asphalt Hamlin.
The crucial matchup between the first-ranked teams was called off shortly after 10 p.m. ET on Monday The NFL is saying the game was “postponed” – Leaving the door slightly open for Buffalo and Cincinnati to possibly resume play at another time.
The NFL announced Tuesday that the Week 18 games would be the last of the regular season.
“After speaking with both teams and NFLPA leadership, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell notified clubs today that the Bills-Bengals game will not be resumed this week,” according to a league statement.
“The NFL has not made any decision regarding resuming play at a later date. The league has not made any changes to the regular season schedule for Week 18.”
The league statement means the Bills will host the New England Patriots and the Bengals will welcome the Baltimore Ravens in Cincinnati on Sunday. The Bills game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET while the Bengals kickoff time is to be determined.
Sure, the NFL could play Buffalo and Cincinnati next weekend and start the playoffs a week late. Under this scenario, the NFL could play its title game on time for February 12 in Glendale, Arizona, if it eliminated the traditional week before the Super Bowl.
Or the league could still opt against that nightmare by limiting the Bills and Bengals’ 2022-23 seasons to 16 games each, while the other 30 NFL teams would play 17 games.
Monday’s Bills-Bengal game had significant playoff implications.
Buffalo is seeking the conference’s top seed, having received a crucial bye in the first round of the playoffs. The Bengals still had an outside chance at No. 1 and could lock up the AFC North had they defeated the Bills on Monday night.
The Bengals led 7–3 in the first quarter when quarterback Joe Burrow completed a 13-yard pass to Tee Higgins, who was tackled by Hamlin.
The play appeared to be routine as Hamlin got up quickly and briefly grabbed or adjusted his face mask before falling backwards.
