Prince Harry recalls ‘painfully awkward’ first date with Cressida Bonas

Harry Wentworth-Stanley, an associate director of estate agents Savills, is the son of Nick Wentworth-Stanley, a debonair Old Etonian, and Claire, now the Marchioness of Milford Haven, who took the title on her second marriage to Harry’s stepfather, the Great had achieved Marquess of Milford Haven.

Before his relationship with his now-wife went official, Harry, who is extremely handsome and stands at 6 feet 4 inches tall, was considered one of London’s most eligible bachelors.

She inherited her looks from her mother, Claire, who is a beauty who remains stunning. He had a brother, James, four years older than him, and a younger sister, Louisa. When Harry was a child, his mother and father divorced. In 1997, Claire married George, Marquess of Milford Haven, a cousin of the Queen who was himself divorced with two children.

The family settled at Great Trippetts, an estate set on 1,000 acres in the Sussex Downs. For a time, life was perfect. Claire remained on good terms with her ex-husband, Nick Wentworth-Stanley, who married Dutch beauty Millie Brenninkmeyer, with whom he had three more children.

Shortly before Christmas 2006, the Marquess and Marchioness and their children moved to Worcestershire to live with Nick and his wife. James, Harry’s older brother, was recovering from a relatively minor procedure. The operation was successful, but in the days that followed James had become very anxious.

One evening, the family learns that James has taken his own life. They were broken by accident.

Claire was shocked by her son’s suicide. Poignantly, it was Harry, then 17, who helped her through it. She said in an interview 18 months after James’ death: ‘For the sake of other children, you have to set an example. If you are strong, it allows them to be strong. If you fall to pieces, so will they.

‘The day after James’ death, his brother Harry said that his greatest fear was that it would destroy me, and that it would destroy everything. It suddenly made me realize how important I was.’

The family founded James Place in his memory, a suicide prevention charity for men which now runs centers in London and Liverpool.

They had a serious relationship when both were students at the University of Leeds. The couple were known to their crowd – for reasons that are not entirely clear – as ‘water-cress’. The romance fizzled out when she left for a gap year in 2011 for Argentina after graduation.

Friends previously said Cressida wasn’t far enough from Harry when another Harry – Prince Harry himself – began pursuing her in the summer of 2012 and a romance ensued. There were concerts, rugby matches, skiing trips and cozy nights out at Kensington Palace.

However, the couple parted ways in 2014 after living together for three years.

Harry Wentworth-Stanley and Cressida were photographed on a Valentine’s Day date the following year, although their relationship became public and official in 2017.

Harry proposed during a trip to the US in August last year and the couple’s smiles at the Instagram announcement told followers all they needed to know about their love for each other.
