Twitter for iPhone is updated with new features that aren’t new at all

The social network’s official app received an update with new features on Friday, following confirmation that developers can no longer build third-party Twitter clients. Actually, these features are not exactly new, but Twitter is bringing them back in its app.

Twitter brings back the option to pin lists and full-sized previews

Last week, an update to the Twitter app for iOS split the home tab into two timelines instead of just one. Now the latest update to the Twitter iPhone app lets users pin their favorite lists to the Home tab. As a result, these lists are also displayed as alternate timelines.

Of course, as you might guess, Twitter eventually scrapped the idea and went back to the regular timeline because the new one wasn’t well-accepted by users.

While the ability to create separate timelines for specific topics is interesting, Twitter is still forcing a timeline with algorithm-based suggestions rather than a chronological timeline.

Also with the last Twitter update, the iOS app stopped showing full-sized image previews. Luckily, Twitter confirmed it was just a bug and today’s update brings back full-sized media previews instead of cropping them to the 16:9 aspect ratio. “Update your app to the latest version on iOS so you can view and post uncropped media,” the company said,

Twitter’s third-party apps are now officially banned

Unfortunately, if you don’t like the changes that come with Twitter’s official app update, there’s not much you can do about it. The company announced this week that it has officially banned developers from using the social network’s APIs to build third-party clients that replace the Twitter app or website.

Due to the announcement, apps like Twitterrific and Tweetbot have been officially shut down. The main reason could be that these apps don’t show ads to users, so they end up hurting Twitter’s advertising revenue.
