A SOLAR STORM is on its way, with "chaotic" space weather destined to rock a region of the Earth in a matter of hours.
Solar storms occur when there are blasts of electromagnetic energy on the Sun's surface.
Dr. Tamitha Skov, a physicist who studies space weather, tweeted: "Confirmed!
During this developing solar storm, we're already seeing aurora in Alberta, Canada.
The magnetic field orientation inside the storm is currently unstable, so expect occasional aurora brightenings during the next 24 hours. G1 (Kp 5) is a possibility."
On Saturday, Dr Skov said there was a "snake-like filament launched as a big #solarstorm while in the Earth-strike zone".
On Saturday, Dr Skov said there was a "snake-like filament launched as a big #solarstorm while in the Earth-strike zone".
It was also expected that amateur radio and GPS users would experience "signal interruptions on Earth's nightside."
On Saturday, Dr. Skov tweeted, "Direct Hit! While in the Earth-strike zone, a snake-like filament launched as a massive #solarstorm.
"NASA forecasts an early July 19 impact." Strong aurora displays are possible, even deep into the mid-latitudes." "Amateur radio and GPS users should expect signal disturbances on Earth's nightside."
